Amplitude

DRIFT (NL)

Glass, brass and robotics 650 x 307 x 1,310 cm

Office lobbies

DRIFT, the Dutch art and design duo, works on experiential sculptures, installations and performances, always seeking unique links between nature, human and technology which have become major inspirations for their site-specific installations and interactive sculptures.

A pulse is a sign of life, and Amplitude represents that of birds. Hovering rhythmically over the lobby halls, Amplitude portrays a flock of birds and reflects mankind’s fascination with flight.

Together with digital synchronisation, each element has a small weight to shift the balance of the glass wings to create different movements, giving an impression of the birds flying smoothly in slow motion. Each bird performs its movement as an individual but together they work as a collective group.

Amplitude does not incorporate any light but spectacularly highlighting the reflection of external and natural light sources.

DRIFT was established by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta in 2007 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Started with product and furniture design, their works have remarkably evolved and increased in scale and impact. Their installations have been exhibited at leading museums, art fairs and institutes worldwide, including Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (USA), Venice Biennale (Italy) and Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair (China).
