Q Steps

DRIFT, the Dutch art and design duo, works on experiential sculptures, installations and performances, always seeking unique links between nature, human and technology which have become major inspirations for their site-specific installations and interactive sculptures.

Meadow, a set of upside-down blooming flowers, reminds the viewers of the sensational character of natural growth processes and the impermanence of constantly changing seasons.

While man-made objects tend to have a static form, everything natural in this world, including people, is subject to continual metamorphosis and adaptation to their surroundings. Meadow is the result of DRIFT’s examination on how an inanimate object can mimic those changes that express characters and emotions.

Accompanied by the soft hues of light, the tasteful colour gradients were painted on the fabric. The palette was custom designed to be subtle and minimalistic to achieve the depth and refinement that resembles nature.

Meadow reacts to people as if they were the sun. Its petals open and close in a poetic choreography that is in harmony with the background music. The flowers offer the retail area a lively and cheerful atmosphere and create the experience of a botanical creature that naturally engages the viewer.

DRIFT was established by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta in 2007 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Started with product and furniture design, their works have remarkably evolved and increased in scale and impact. Their installations have been exhibited at leading museums, art fairs and institutes worldwide, including Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (USA), Venice Biennale (Italy) and Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair (China).
